What influences design, and what does design influence?

The Official Stuff:

In this area of study, we will:

  • learn about factors that impact design decisions, as well as the impact of design on people and our planet.

  • consider these influences when designing three-dimensional objects for specific purposes, contexts and users.

  • integrate newly developed understandings of good design, and move beyond human-centred mindsets to also consider the needs of other species, our planet and its future. In doing so, sustainability and circular design practices become an area of particular focus.

We will:

  • analyse how the design of objects in both past and present contexts have been influenced by economic, technological, cultural, environmental and social factors.

  • examine the potential of design itself to shape behaviours, interactions, systems and outcomes.

 

As you respond to a given brief, you will:

  • use this knowledge to inform their own design of a sustainable, three-dimensional object, adopting circular design practices and mindsets to address issues such as mass production, consumption and material waste.

  • consider various factors when making design decisions, such as how best to offer culturally appropriate or cost-effective solutions, integrate new technologies or inspire positive social change.  

  • employ divergent thinking strategies as they develop design ideas, experiment with design elements and principles and consider combinations of materials and media.

  • apply annotations featuring descriptive and analytical design terminology that are used to explain design decisions, and to evaluate the strengths and limitations of ideas.

At stages throughout the evolution of ideas and refinement of concepts, you will:

  • present your  work for critique and respond to feedback using convergent thinking strategies.

As you explore the Develop and Deliver stages of the VCD design process, you will:

  • acquire skills in representing and rendering forms using manual and digital drawing techniques.

  • generate Ideation sketches to document ideas, and paraline and perspective drawings are used to visualise forms and examine details, proportions and the placement of parts.

  • develop Two-dimensional drawings to explore and present ideas, such as technical flats and third-angle orthogonal projections.

  • when appropriate, use Low-fidelity prototyping to represent and test design concepts.

  • acquire knowledge and skills related to technical drawing conventions, applying these either manually or digitally to resolved documentation drawings."

Outcome 3

On completion of this unit you should be able to develop a sustainable object, considering design’s influence and factors that influence design.

To achieve this outcome the student will draw on key knowledge and key skills outlined in Area of Study 3.

  • Research historical influences on design, such as war and politics, considering the social, technological, cultural, environmental and economical impacts. Find examples of designs from the 20th century, such as William Miller’s inflatable chair (1944) made and manufactured from post-war materials and production techniques, documenting these in folios with explanatory annotations. This can then be contrasted with contemporary examples such as PPE gear, screens and other items created to protect people from infection.

  • Examine the entire life-cycle of a designed object, including how it functions as part of a larger system or service, as well as the influences of ‘fast fashion’ such as AirRobe and Circular design practices. Engage in a debate about the shape and extent of a designer’s ethical and environmental obligations; for example:

    • Are designers responsible for the entire life-cycle of a product, building or service, beyond the initial design stage?

      • Are they accountable for the use and disposal of their designs?

        • Is human-centred design actually good for the planet?

  • Consider the work of the Ellen Macarthur Foundation. Investigate myths and truths about circular design including ideas around:

    • recycling

    • making products durable

    • the iterative process.

Design’s influence and influences on design

 

Let's look closely at the AOS 3 outcomes and assessment tasks to inform our planning. By having a clear understanding of the requirements, we can be set up for success. In this Area of Study, we will be focusing on the Develop and Deliver stages of the VCD Design Process Double Diamond Model.

In this area of study, you will learn about factors that impact design decisions. We will explore environmental sustainability by considering the impact that design has on people and our planet.​

Through the set tasks we will explore what influences design, and how design itself influences the world.

You’ll look at how design choices are shaped by economic, technological, cultural, environmental and social factors.

You’ll also consider how design affects people, communities, systems, and the planet.

 

Your main project will be to design a three-dimensional object that is sustainable and uses circular design principles (reduce, reuse, recycle, repair).

This means moving beyond designing just for human needs, you’ll also think about the needs of other species and the future of our planet.

 

To do this, you will:

  • Research past and present designs and analyse what influenced them.

  • Experiment with ideas using divergent thinking (lots of quick sketches and brainstorming).

  • Apply design elements and principles to develop and refine your ideas.

  • Use manual and digital drawing techniques (2D and 3D) to show your designs clearly.

  • Render drawings to represent surfaces, textures, light and shadow.

  • Annotate and evaluate your design decisions using correct design terminology.

  • Present and refine your work after feedback, using convergent thinking to select the strongest ideas.​​

As you make your way though the example tasks set out below, that you are free to use as for your work, you will find The tasks will outline for you the official information that connects to the unit requirements. This is set out in the following order: Task name, purpose, learning intention, success criteria, followed by a step by step guide to completing the task. Then you will also find a worked example. each task will be assisted with resources that may be of assistance for you as you work your way through the tasks. have a go and document everything along your way.

Task 1: Research Influences on Design​Instructions:

  • Select two designed objects (one past, one present).

  • Research how different factors shaped the design decisions.

  • In your folio, create a page with the Images of the objects, and a written analysis using design terminology that covers the description of the product, the influences of its design, and the impact this design has had.

  • When writing about the influences on design, consider the following for each bullet point:

  • Economic (cost, production, trade)

  • Technological (new materials, processes, digital tools)

  • Cultural (aesthetics, traditions, fashion, values)

  • Environmental (sustainability, resources, climate)

  • Social (user needs, accessibility, trends, identity)
