Unit 3 Outcome 2

Studio Process

Assessment:

• Units 3 and 4 School-assessed Coursework: 10 per cent

• Units 3 and 4 School-assessed Task: 60 per cent

• End-of-year examination: 30 per cent.

The official part:

'In this area of study students progressively refine their ideas, techniques, materials and processes and aesthetic qualities discussed in the exploration proposal. Throughout the individual studio process, students keep a visual diary and investigate the focus, subject matter, sources of inspiration and art form/s through the exploration and development of ideas, materials, techniques, art elements, art principles and demonstration of aesthetic qualities. Students explore, clarify and consolidate ideas they have discussed in their exploration proposal. The studio process is developed in sufficient breadth and depth to support students to produce a range of potential directions that will be progressively developed and evaluated. Students progressively present a range of potential directions. From this range they select at least two potential directions that will be used to generate artworks in Unit 4. Selected potential directions are considered and carefully evaluated to ensure the potential for the development of artworks. Students make selections based on the potential directions that most effectively communicate concepts, ideas and aesthetics, and which provide the scope to demonstrate the refinement of techniques and the application of materials appropriate to the communication of ideas. Students further develop their understanding of key terminology associated with the art forms identified in their exploration proposal. Reflection, analysis and evaluation of experimental and developmental work are documented in written and visual annotations, providing clarification of ideas and working processes. Through these annotations students progressively record their thinking and working practices to support the development and realisation of their studio process.' Outcome 2:

On completion of this unit the student should be able to progressively present an individual studio process recorded in written and visual form that produces a range of potential directions, and reflects the concepts and ideas documented in the exploration proposal and work plan. To achieve this outcome the student will draw on key knowledge and key skills outlined in Area of Study 2.

Key knowledge

• ways of responding creatively to sources of inspiration and ideas in the exploration proposal

• the methods of exploring and developing ideas in the exploration proposal to support the development of the individual studio process

• the methods for the conceptual and aesthetic development of subject matter, including experimental and exploratory work

• the properties of materials and techniques appropriate to the selected art making and art form/s

• the processes for reflection, analysis and evaluation

• the strategies for identifying, developing and evaluating a range of potential directions throughout the studio process

• appropriate terminology

• the methods for progressively recording and documenting visual and written explorations in a visual diary.

Key skills

• use an exploration proposal to frame an individual studio process

• interpret and respond to the sources of inspiration and ideas in the exploration proposal

• develop individual and personal subject matter and ideas conceptually and aesthetically

• explore art elements and art principles, materials and techniques to demonstrate aesthetic qualities in selected art forms • develop and refine techniques appropriate to the communication of individual ideas

• document reflections, identify, analyse and evaluate the experimental and developmental work, including the clarification of ideas and studio processes in a visual diary

• develop a range of potential directions throughout the studio process

• use appropriate terminology to annotate studio practice.

Unit 3 – Outcome 2 – Criteria 2

Interpretation of and response to sources of inspiration to explore, develop and refine ideas throughout the studio process.

There are detailed annotations and citations that evaluate how the exploration, development and refinement of individual ideas, aesthetic qualities, materials and techniques in a studio process.

Evidence of exploration, development and refinement:

  • There are written and visual references in the form of annotations and citations that explain how artistic and personal influences will be used and interpreted throughout the studio process.

  • Visual material including artworks by Edward Hopper is cited and referenced to support the ideas, subject matter and conceptual possibilities discussed in the visual diary.

  • The personal inspiration that references the concept of disconnectedness is documented through mind maps and visual imagery in the visual diary.

  • All forms of Inspiration and influences are clearly linked to the ideas expressed in the exploration proposal.

Unit 3 – Outcome 2 – Criteria 3

Exploration of conceptual possibilities in the studio process that develops individual and personal subject matter as discussed in the exploration proposal and work plan.

A range of related conceptual possibilities has been clarified and documented to explore, develop and refine individual and personal subject matter and ideas in a studio process.

Evidence of exploration, development and refinement:

  • Exploration of conceptual possibilities linked to the selection and development of individual and personal subject matter discussed in the exploration proposal and work plan.

  • In response to conceptual possibilities, a range of personal and individual subject matter has been progressively explored, developed and refined through documentation in the studio process, including disconnectedness from one’s self and society as well as social anxiety.

Unit 3 – Outcome 2 – Criteria 3

Evidence of exploration, development and refinement:

  • Exploration of conceptual possibilities linked to the selection and development of individual and personal subject matter discussed in the exploration proposal and work plan.

  • In response to conceptual possibilities, a range of personal and individual subject matter has been progressively explored, developed and refined through documentation in the studio process, including disconnectedness from one’s self and society as well as social anxiety.

Unit 3 – Outcome 2 – Criteria 4

Evidence of exploration, development and refinement:

  • Cinaya’s use of materials, techniques and processes relevant to a range of approaches to painting is discussed in the exploration proposal

  • art elements and art principles are used to demonstrate aesthetic qualities relating to loneliness and isolation.

  • Throughout the visual diary, the application and refinement of skills in the use of materials, techniques and processes relevant to painting are evident.

  • use of painting materials, techniques and processes help to demonstrate aesthetic qualities and develop visual language.

Unit 3 – Outcome 2 – Criteria 5

Evidence of exploration, development and refinement:

  • Cinaya’s written and visual documentation includes research, trials and experiments relating to the ideas expressed in the exploration proposal and work plan.

  • Cinaya’s work is presented in a visual diary.

  • A range of potential directions are clearly numbered and titled and easily identified in the visual diary.

  • The visual diary is paginated and sometimes pages are date.

  • At least two potential directions have been identified and evaluated using art terminology.

Unit 3 – Outcome 2 – Criteria 4

Apply skills to explore art elements and principles, materials, techniques and processes that communicate individual ideas and demonstrate aesthetic qualities.

Considered and accomplished application of skills in the exploration and refinement of art elements and principles, materials, techniques, processes and aesthetic qualities that demonstrate connections between art form/s and individual ideas.

Documentation of exploratory and developmental work in the studio process clarifies ideas to identify and evaluate potential directions.

Cinaya has presented an organised collection of exploratory and developmental work in a visual diary to progressively advance and elaborate upon the individual ideas explained in the exploration proposal and work plan.

Cinaya has identified and evaluated a range of potential directions to clarify and refine individual ideas in the studio process and concisely explain the development of future artworks.

Evidence of exploration, development and refinement:

  • Cinaya’s written and visual documentation includes research, trials and experiments relating to the ideas expressed in the exploration proposal and work plan.
